Default 250TRX BURNING TOO MUCH OIL?

Hi, guys-
I am new to this forum. I also belong to delphi forums and have found forums have a lot of valuable information for my VTX 1300 motorcycle. I thought I would turn to you guys for help with my ATV. It's a 2004 250trx I think--I will have to double check with my hubby. Anyway, he is ready to sell it or give it away. We have only had it for about 7 months and it has problems. When you ride it the exhaust smokes a whole lot like something is wrong. My husband looked at the carbuerator and it's okay--he thinks it might be the oil is burning too quickly. We tried to have the dealership look at the atv but they said the warranty wouldn't cover it because when they looked at it there was water in the air box! Yeah--like we just washed the atv with the hose before we brought it into them. We are very frustrated and don't know who to call or what to do about it. Can anyone shed some light on it? I love my Honda VTX motorcycle and we even have a honda engine on our push mower---but as far as ATV's go we might decide to buy a Kawasaki next time.

So it is a Recon or 250ex? It shouldn't be burning any oil at all. Do you have to add oil after riding it? I don't know how you got water in the airbox from just washing the quad? I would think your airbox should be better sealed than that. In any case, maybe you should try taking it to a different dealer.

I think it's a 250ex and yeah--I think it would be a good idea for us to take it to a different dealer. Thanks for the input--it's greatly appreciated!

The 250ex is agreat little quad, my wife has one and we've never had any problems with it. It shouldn't smoke at all, if it is burning that much oil it is either valve guides or your rings. Definately take it to a dealer as this sounds like a warranty issue!

i think the warranty on that would be 6 months unless you bought an extended warranty. If you've had it for 7 months, then TECHNICALLY they wouldn't have to help you out at all.

HOWEVER, I work at a Ford dealership as a technician and we can usually get Ford to cover some things even after warranty, so I would probably find a different dealer and see if you can find somebody nicer to talk to.

Hi just wanted to chime in, I have an 04 250ex. Iv'e had it for about 8 month's now and it run's great. I'm a pretty big guy for a 250 so i run it pretty hard, actually it's pretty much pinned most of the time. I piped & jetted it for a little more power, mine use's no oil at all. Your problem is most likely that your ring's didn't seat properly for whatever reason. I think quicksilver is right you should wipe the airbox out and try a different dealer, alot of times it's up to the dealer's discretion. Technically the warrenty is 6 month's but honda should cover it anyway, you just need to find the right dealer. I've been riding honda for about 20 year's now with no major problem's to speak of, I don't want to sound brand loyal, I ride with lot's of guy's with kawi's, zuki's and haha's and there all great quad's, i just seem to have less problem's. hope this help's. RIDE RED !!!!!!

Hey, guys-
Thanks for all the advice! We ended up trading in the 250 for a Honda 400 Rancher AT. Wow- 4 wheel drive is awesome! We went to Taskers Gap--an ATV park in VA yesterday and there were a lot of rocky hills but I had no problem with the 400. We went on a 10 mile trail (20 roundtrip) over streams, rocks through mud puddles and even rode a narrow path up to a fire tower where we had lunch and could see VA and West VA--what a day! I don't think the 250 would've made it. I like not having to think about shifting---especially when I have to go up or down a hill of rocks!
