Default 400 ex starter spins

new here but have been watching post for a lttle while.. have a question... my starter will spin along with the flywheel ring gear but it doesnt spin the motor.. has anyone had this problem.. I was told that the bearing on the ring gear is designed to spin free one way and lock up the other..it looks like I may have to replace it but was told that its somewhere in the $350 zone any ideas??

The one way clutch is bad. I think the 350 price tag must be with a bike shops installation.

well you can try take off the connections and clean them up, check the battery cables clean them check any grounds. See if that helps if not take off the starter and see what it looks like, it could have worn off the teeth or your fly wheel might be screwed up. Just options, you might be able to get it rebuilt maybe if a new one is too much for you. Thats why a pull cord back up would be nice on the 400EX so you wouldn't have to buy a new starter right away.

Im pretty sure the starters good and its the one way clutch... its also missing and wont stay running unless I keep it throttled up pretty good. What I dont understand is what happened all of a sudden to cause all this.

yeah, an allen wrench. also, if there's no plastic parts near by, using a torch to heat the bolts a little will help break the threadlocker loose that they probably used from the factory. should be able to get them loose fairly easily, just dont melt any seals or anything with the torch. I would recommend a propane torch or butane torche, dont use an acetylene torch, that would be way too hot.
