Default washing secrets.

i live at sea level about ten miles away from the beach. i was wondering if there are certain techniques to washing my quad to prevent rust. towel dry, WD-40. after i wash my quad if i do not towel it off will it have more of a chance to rust than if i do towel it off.what is your washing routine? do i really need to wash it after riding in dirt or just when i ride in the sand?
