What is/was wrong with my '05 Kodiak 450?
#1
I ran it quite a bit on Sunday. Then I took it to the cabin along the bumpy offroad on my trailer using the fulton lock down system, and it didn't want to start when I got there. It wasn't the battery, as it kept cycling but just wouldn't start. I tried starting it for probably 5 seconds at a clip with choke on, half, off, etc. It sounded like it did once when I forgot to put the gas on, but I had the gas on and it wouldn't start. Finally, it started, and I ran it immediately so it wouldn't cut off, but a few minutes later when I returned, it putted and cut out on me.
I couldn't get it to start again that night, but the next morning I did, and it cut out even though I was giving it gas. Finally, I got it started, and noticed the reverse light "r" blinking while the park light was on (it was in park). As I took off, the r light stopped blinking, and ran it a quarter mile before it simply cut off on me. When I tried to start it again, the gears were grinding as I tried to put it in gear. I managed to get it started once or twice for a little before it cut out, and at least one of those times, it was in park and the "r" was blinking again.
After a while, I finally got it going again, and it ran and started fine for over 5 miles of riding/stopping over the course of more than an hour, as though there was never a problem to begin with. As far as I know, it is still fine now. I use 89 octane, and had just filled the tank before riding. What the heck was the problem? I want to know what the cause may be in case it happens again.
Also, I am a pretty strong guy, but that pull starter is too hard to pull to try starting it. My buddy had his Kodiak there too, and even his is too hard to pull, even after pulling to resistance before pulling hard, etc. What good is a pull starter if someone above average in strength can't even pull it?
Any information would be greatly appreciated!
By the way, I have only 14 hours on it, and 50 miles! Remember, it started and ran fine for a few hours just 5 days before.

Nope. I got it in October so the warranty was up two months ago. They should have a 2 year/300 mile warranty or something. I can understand some kind of fuel problem, but that blinking "r" that happened on two different occasions has me worried and puzzled.

Take a look at your air filter. I strung my bike up in a tree to clean it and forgot to turn off the gas and let it run out of fuel. the Filter got soaked with gas and did the same thing your bike is doing. Maybe the bumpy road caused fuel to back up into the filter.
Also if you read your owners manual it should tellyou what the blinking light means, mine also did that one but can't remember what it means. I have a shop manual for my bike so maybe that is where i read about the light, so if you can't find it in the O.M. call your dealler and they May look it up for you.
The shop manual can be bought from Yamaha for $60, it is a great investment.

Thanks. The air filter could be soaked with gas even though I had the gas OFF when I trailered it in there? I will definately check it out and appreciate the possible solution. I know we looked at it and it didn't look dirty, but we didn't look close to see if it was wet. I hope it isn't that because I plan to take it back in there a lot and don't want this to happen over and over again.
