atv magazine woes
#1
a while ago i picked up an atv magazine(spring 05) and they posted the top speeds for all the big bore utilities. i thought that was pretty cool, except for one thing......all the top speeds were way off. bf750-56mph,sp800-55, kq700-53, grizz660-52, ac650-52, and rincon-49. so i wrote them a letter, told them the correct top speeds, and asked them what the deal was. they stood by there words and basically told me i was a liar/crazy man.
did anybody else see this article (by tony minot) and if so what is your thoughts. am i right or is atv magazine right
i say: brute force-?(but at least 70), sp800-?(at least 70), king quad-69, grizzly-65, ac650-61, rincon-60

Those speeds they listed are WAY off. I think it may be a combination of liability and location. They don't really want to make the machines sound too powerful so as not to fuel the negative image of ATVers. Also, most of the magazines are located and do most of their testing it seems like out west in high altitudes. I believe that has something to do with top speeds as opposed to lower altitudes like here in the Midwest. I just wouldn't think it would be that dramatic. Something is certainly wrong there though. I'll definitely be sending something in as well. Maybe if they get enough responses they'll figure something out. It was "ATV Magazine?"

I think the mags get new machines that have not been broken in yet, this could make
a huge difference. Some machines, especially the Honda's, are very tight when new and take
a while to really open up, one reason why Honda's are said to be slower than the others. As far
as any of those machines not hitting at least 60, bulls**t!

I'm not sure utes go as fast as everybody thinks! Maybe when you are hurtling down the trail on a huge heavy 600-800 pound monster, it just FEELS like you are going fast???
Consider the weight-to-power ratio of a heavy ute, compared to a 350-375 pound sport bike??? No wonder the manufacturers keep trying to out do each other every year with bigger and bigger engines. They can't be creative enough to make them lighter, so all they can do is give them bigger (and therefore heavier) engines. This kind of thinking just creates its own viscious circle!
