Where's the dipstick for the tranny? I can see the one for the counterbalancer, but where the heck is the other? What oil, and how much do I need for the tranny?

you don't have a tranny dipstick. only the 2x4 models have them. tranny fluid is polaris chaincase lube. capacity is 32 ounces. The filler bolt is located on the same side as the pull start down near the bottom.

Weird, on Partsland fiche for '99 Xplorer 400, gearcase, ref#52 it shows a dipstick.

That 'dipstick' may just be referring to the plug over the fill hole for the chaincase lube. On my 95 Xplorer it is a short 'plug' with a magnetic tip and o-rings that just caps the fill hole. The plug only extends into the chaincase cavity about an inch. I just fill up the chaincase until I can see lube on the end of the plug when removed.

Pull the long black cover off the right (as your sitting on it) of the bike. Then look at the tranny about halfway inbetween the front and the back you will find a large head bolt with the head facing up.

Thanks...yes I see it now. Geez, "Scrama"...no I didn't think you were an idiot...I looked where you said and there was the plug. Sometimes its helpful to me to look at the exploded views in the parts fiche, thats why I mentioned that I saw it there.

My '98 has a dipstick. Right back from the recoil. It doesn't look like the pic on Partsland, though. That one looks like it has a finger loop which would make it easier to remove than the one on mine which looks like the one shown for the '95 (part 54.)

I think the parts land diagram is wrong for our years. I can see where that could cause you some confusion. Sorry if I came across with a bad tone but I just changed mine out the other day so I knew exactly what to do. Glad you found it. One more question for you. did the pulg have a magnet in it? was their any junk on it. The oil that came out of my drain was like grey green syrup real thick nasty stuff. nothing like the thin blue that goes in. I also replaced my counter balance oil and it came out looking like chocolate milk. good thing I checked it. My front diff fluid was as clean as it was when it was new
