chain drive front axle from old magnum could be used to make I.R.S. on Sport Bike-Need Parts
#1
Okay guys this is a wild one, bear with me. First off, I think Independent Rear Suspension is the way to go, even Sport Quads. The Physics, as well as every other motor sport back this up. Stadium Ultralights couldn't make those incredible repeated jumps without it. I.R.S. would
mean Sport quads could handle rougher terrain at higher speeds, and when one rear wheel drops less twist is put on the chassis. Anyone with a Sportsman knows how great it is. Plus great ground clearance too.
So, how to go about it. The Sportsman gear case is far too heavy to begin with. We need to start with a Scrambler or a Honda 400EX or even a Raptor, just to prove the point.
Whatever parts we can find off the shelf is a good place to start. A chain drive with half-shafts would be lighter and more efficient, and because there would be no swingarm movement, less maintenence.
I believe there is a front axle assembly, chain driven, from an earlier model Magnum that might be usable. Combine that with hubs, A-arms,
half-shafts and anti-sway bar from a Sportsman,
fabricate a sub-frame assembly to hold it all together and replace the swing-arm and we've got a starting point.
Finding the parts is key, checking out that Magnum front axle to see if it can work. Wrecks are a good source. Choosing the right guinea pig, and keeping the weight increase to an acceptable 10-15 lbs is fundamental.
I have no fear of someone stealing this idea,
I hope they do. Especially if it's a manufacturer.
I have no intention of setting up an aftermarket
biz, I just want to make people think about what could be, and in the process maybe we'll get better quads.
So anybody know of any wrecked or parted out Sportsman or front chain driven Magnums?
How about a nice 400EX we can hack on?

I have been thinking of making an alluminum? frame for some time now but don't know if there is a market for such a thing. By the way it would be for a sportsman. I think the weight saving would help on these beasts but have never had the machine down to the frame to see what the weight savings would actually be. Has anyone weighted just the frame?
