motor rebuild cost?
#1
Approximately how much will it cost to have the top end rebuilt on a 250r? I think this is just honing the cylinder and new rings, but maybe boring and a new piston are required, I dont know.
Its not blown up or anything, just needs rebuilt like a regular thing. So I dont think boring would be needed?

Hmmmmmmmm, just puttin in new rings? this is a job that you can easily do yourself. you dont even really need a hone for a simple ring job. heres the trick. once you have the cylinder off, spray the sleeve down with WD-40 and scrub with a scotch brite pad. this will break the glaze and allow the rings to seat.
most of the time when i do a ring job, i dont take the head off the jug (unless of course you suspect a gasket problem). that saves about $15 to $20 depending on which head gasket you use. ive had the best luck with ATC style head gaskets.
if you are unsure how long its been since the last top-end job on your quad, be sure to check the amount of play the piston has in the sleeve. to much play or "slap", creates that noisy top end rattle. also check the piston for hair line cracks, especially in the skirt area. next id check the play in the wrist pin and needle bearing.
if the piston checks ok, id go ahead and install new rings and a wrist pin bearing.
ive probably changed my rings out about 50 or more times so far, with no prblems using these methods.

Ok, well I found out today that the cylinder has to be bored, or so my local shop says. I dont trust them much, but what can you do.
So...they tell me that its 38 to have it bored, then 100 for the piston, rings, bearings and like 30 for the gaskets, these are all stock parts, I want high compression wiseco, they are all tellin me how bad that is on the engine, how it doesnt help, so i want a CR gasket for my compression, no thats hard on the motor, you dont want to do that.
So i said, well I will do it all then, I will order my own parts and have a machine shop bore it for me, they didnt like that much, so they say ok, we can get what you want, but its gonna be almost 400 now
So I tell them I can have CT racing do a full porting and all for 450. They said sorry, we cant go lower than what we quoted you
So....I am doin the labor, they are doing the boring.

Rhino99,
This is the exact reason I taught myself to do all of my own wrenching/labor on my quads. The local shops are often over priced and they dont understand performance issues (especially for quads).
They are way off on their prices for the CR gasket and piston. I wouldnt deal there. Besides, CT, LRD, NACS etc. etc. know far more about the 250r and how to get more power out of it then your shop ever will. Call NACS and tell them the year of your quad, they will tell you which year 250r piston to use to get more compression.
Oh, and if they (your shop) dont think compression builds horsepower, they know nuttin about high performance.

Do the work yourself, anybody can do it. Saves you money and you'll know that its done right. I have realized that most of the repair men at atv shops around here are a bunch of dumba$$es. (no offense) And you'll appreciate it alot more.
