Default Sportsman manual says 1 thing, you all say diff...

me and my buddy were fixing to ride the other day when i checked my oil to find that it was too low and i needed some oil...well, i didn't have any polaris oil, so i got the manual out hoping to find a substitute and the manual says use SAE 10W-40???? i thought polaris oil, that i have been running for 2 years, was 0W-40? what gives? i am so confused on this now, i did a search and read many of the past talks about amsoil vs. polaris, but what is the bottom line???
do i use the polaris 0W-40?
do i use amsoil 10W-40?
or what? please help, my new oil change is due and i need to know what to get. the manual has screwed my head up now

I have both the Service and Owners manuals for my 04 and it states 0W40 in both. No mention of 10W40..........

Polaris makes oil for their machines and their machines only , so it would only make sence to use polaris oil , your manual probaly ment that if you didnt have or couldnt get polaris oil that for a substitute you could use 10w-40

it is not that it didn't say use polaris oil, but it said use polaris 10w-40 and this is what really threw me off. the substitute was any SAE 10w-40 as well, and i thought the oil that i have gotten for the last 2 1/2 years said 0w-40...why would the service manual say Polaris 10w-40???

Polaris doesn't make any oil. The buy sh*t from the lowest bidder and have a Polaris label slapped on (as do ALL oems.) I have never and will never use any manufacturer branded lube of any kind! Use Amsoil, or Mobil 1 or any quality synthetic and it will be better and less expensive than the crap the dealer peddles! Oh yeah, 0w-40.

the filters i have are Emgo, i know they are not top of the line, but they are descent i guess, better than paying more for the same thing except "polaris" is stamped on it...
