A problem with my DS can you help?
#1
Hi all,
I hope someone can help. I have this problem that when my DS hits about 6,000 rpms it seems to just bog down. Runs great and has great power up till it hits 6,000. The Cooling fan doesn't want to come on, on its own. I don't think it is getting a good connection to a senser that is located on the left side where the coolent is run to or from the radiator. Not really sure if this could be connect to the problem I am having with the limited rpms that I am getting. I wonder if it could be a problem with that computer that limits the rpms and it is for some reason sutting me down early.. but it bogs down insted of just limiting the rpms which doesn't seem the same. I haven't done any mod. to it.
Thanks a lot,

Is this the red model or is it a baja. I just had the same problem with the fan not wanting to come on. ITs a pretty easy fix now that im finished with it. Your thermostat is located On the right hand side of your bike , On the back of it there is a temperature switch that has two wires connected into it. With your bike off connect those two wires together with a jumper wire make sure the 2 wires have good contact with each other, turn the key switch on and the fan should start running. Under the seat on the lefthand side there is a 15amp fuse make sure it is not blown. If your fan starts running you need to replace the temperature switch. If the fuse is good and the fan does not start you need a new fan. the # for the switch is711265390 I will let you know tommorrow how much they are i robbed one off my other bike. As far as the bogging no clue.

Hey 2Big, I did have a blown fuse, and fixed it. I also got the fan a running by wireing the two wires together...(I blew the fuse doing that) wasn't sure if that could affect the ds in anyway not being conected to that tempiture thing. The bogging down problem is the bugger... just don't know what it could be.
Hey azsand, I know about the rev limiter, it is suppose to have a rev limit of about 7900, at least that is where it stoped its clime, but always stayed steady and never bogged down on me when it hit the rev limit.... I am however not very mechanical. Do you have any ideas what's up with my ds?

Lovingit, Might be the CDI but I would also check your fuel system. Float level, jetting, Fuel filter in the tank. I had a problem similar to that mine turn out to be a small peice of junk in the bowl. I also had the same fan problem mine turned out to be a bad connection on the power plug that goes to the fan. Its located on the left side near the CDI.

I had a problem with mine doing that, especially at the dunes. I ended up trailering it for my whole trip after I couldn't figure it out. Turned out to be the vent on the fuel tank was clogged. Make sure your's isn't. It's easy to get to and now I don't even run a hose off of the fitting, it works well, so don't worry.

Hey Scatterbrain, I did empty out the old fuel by disconecting the fuel line from the Carb, it came out fast and didn't seem to be any ubstruction. I was thinking perhaps jetting... what is float level? I'm new to most of this, trying to learn so I don't have to spend all my money at the shop. The fan problem is easly fixed if I don't have to have it connected to that heat senser... I've just wired them together, so now the fan blows when the ds is on.
Hey Monkey, The vent, is that the same as the fuel filter that is in the tank? As I told Scatter, I drained my old fuel and it seemed to drain fine... could it still be the problem.. as you might note I don't have a lot of knowledge about this stuff. What hose and what fitting are you talking about as well, can you give me more info if this can still be the problem?
Thanks so much for all your guy's help!

hey loving it there is a couple of guys on here that take a clear plastic hose and put it on the barb on the bottom of the carb bowl where the black hose is now and take the other end of the hose and hold it up by the top of the carb and turn your gas on then open the drain screw on the bottom of the bowl and the clear hose will fill with gas to the level it is in the carb, I forget who it is but they have the fuel level even with the top of the bowl if it is higher your float needs to be adjusted and according if lower, i have a clear hose and checked mine like that and it worked awesome, easier than ripping your carb apart and using the float gauge, let us know what you find out

Hey jack, Do you think it could be the float that is my problem? I don't have clue as to how most of this works... I understand the basics of what you are talking about... but! how do I adjust the float once I get to that point?
Thanks,
