I have a '97 air cooled quad and when my quad heats up after riding for an extended period of time I loose power. Even going up small hills I have a hard time. Can anyone give me an insight on what might be the problem and/or to fix this problem.

Thanks in advance for any insight on my quad's problem.

Gary: Does the oil temp light come on while riding? If it does then you either need to clean the oil cooler fins out with a hose or pressure washer or car wash. We race a 505cc modified Wolverine in GNCC Cross Country and had a similar problem at the start of this race season. We corrected it by installing a larger oil cooler. You may also check the carb vent tube and gas cap vent tube for dirt or restriction. This will cause a fuel starvation problem which will appear as a loss of power. Yamaha now installs a small screen in the carb vent which you can buy and install in you quad to prevent dirt in the carb vent. Hope this helps.

If the above suggestions don't solve the overheating problem, you may want to do a plug read to see if the jetting is on the lean side, which would cause overheating and subsequent loss of power also
