LT80 rear clutch weight / front rollers
#1
Ok, doing some work to a '04 STOCK LT80.
I've seen some say that cutting down the rear clutch shoes to about 175-180 grams gives some decent improvent.
Any truth to that?
If so, what part of each shoe do you cut of?
The end of the shoe itself (not likely I don't think), or the material on top of the shoe, which you can sand down a bit to get the glaze off? (I'm kind of a dummy to not know this answer)
Also,
I removed 2 front rollers a while ago. But I just got a new LT80 with all kind of parts, including some drilled out rollers......
4 stock front rollers weigh about 39/40 grams.
4 of the drilled rollers weigh about 29/30 grams.
Which would be better to use on the stock LT, the 4 stock or 4 drilled rollers???
Thanks a Bunch guys...........

Cutting down the rear clutch shoes will improve take off. Stock, the rear clutch arms weight about 216 grams. Removing weight will give you more stall IE: the revs will come up higher before it starts to grab and take off. Cutting and drilling is done to lighten the rear shoes. If you remove matl, you want to cut the metal area "outside" of the pad area (brake matl), leaving the notch/ rubber stopper area in tact. Cut a little, weigh it, cut a little more, weigh it, repeat until you hit the weight your after. Then repeat the process on the other (2) arms. They all should be at the same weight to function correctly. With our race LT80, our arms are currently @ 155 grams. This real low weight and really only good for racing. This weight gives us about 5K RPM's of stall and so allows the atv to launch hard. Too hard for everyday casual riding. At 185 grams it should help you. For the front clutch, stock is (6) 10 gram rollers. Removing 2 rollers (20 grams) will will help. As you noted 4 rollers is 40 grams. And yes, you can drill our the center of the rollers to get various weights (8 or 9 grams). Many variantions in roller weight can be done. Changes to the front clutch typically has to do with altering the shift speed from m low to high gear. There is "so much more" that can be done. A heavier "rear" (main) clutch spring, stiffer clutch arm springs, re-work of the rear pulley (more travel), the face on the front clutch can be machined (different pitch), weight can be ground off the roller area's, washer under the front clutch arm (spacing/addl roller travel) Etc. Get more information from various people (like LT80 "Jack"). If you stay with a stock pipe or a DG pipe he can offer you good information to better performancce over stock. Ifd you like he can even work both clutches for you. But unless your racing it, you don't want to go crazy. Again Jack (LT80 on forum) can assist you on these issue in more depth as he has a wealth of knowledge on this machine.

Thanks Rude Dog,
I know LT80 and have got some good info from him. I actually just bought a quad with his motor work and he is going to help me through taht thing to get it running as well as it should He is great.
I'm currently working on the STOCK LT.
Yes, we are racing it, so I want to make it a good racer and also everyday rider. So I'm just going for some middle ground to give the kids a chance against the 90cc quads. Don't want to really mod it out, just work on the small simple things so it stays pretty much stock. I'll probably go down to about 175/180 and see how that does for now.
That is some good info you gave, I appreciate it.
Off to do the rears and get it all back together and see how it does.
Changes I made today are.
- Put Works shocks on
- Removed the 4 stock rollers (40grams), and put in 4 drilled rollers(30grams)
- Will trim rear clutch shoes to about 175/180 grams
- Changed the plug, still just the stock plug though.
- Made a chain roller to tighten that up
I have a carburetor I got with the new quad the guy said should work great with the stock motor, but don't know much about them yet, so I don't want to mess with it and have something go wrong and not be able to race this Sunday. Gonna open it up and see what the jetting is in it, and he said part of it had been ported a little bit or something like that???????????
Anyway, thanks again

Wow, I got one of the shoes cut down to 190 grams.
Hopefully I didn't mess it up. But if so luckily I have more
I'll post some pics so you guys that have done this can look and see what you think,
but it sure seemed like I took a LOT of material off just to get to 190. Yikes
Not sure about trying to go to 180 or so........
After I get a link for the pics, let me know what you think.
I need to get this done by Sunday, but we'll see.
Thanks a Bunch

You'll prolly need to go yo 4 stock rollers. 30 grams will be too little for a stock motor.
LOL, you haven't hurt anything by going to 180 grams on the rear shoes. I been taking them down to 132.
Your doing fine.

Thanks Jack,
After thinking about it, I did put the 4 stock rollers back in the front.
I just couldn't believe how much I had to take off to get to 190,
didn't want to go any farther, hehehe.
I'm gonna finish them up today and get it back together and see how she runs......
After the race this weekend, I'm gonna try to start on the new one with your motor pretty soon.
I'll get ahold of ya, thanks a Bunch.

Why didn't I lighten the rear clutch shoes a long time ago
I gave up and left them at 186 grams............
Wow does that thing jump off the line, and respond great when you get on the throttle
What a huge difference that made
That is a great idea for the stock LT.......
my daughter has her last race of this series Sunday, and there is no doubt that this thing will put the hurt on the kid that has beat her all year

Dear Jack,
I have been trying to get on to ask a million questions! I just bought my neighbor's LT-80 '91. They were the second owner and never really tore it apart. I bought it, and tore it apart, litarally to the ground! I have Arden shipping me wrx shox made to my size 200 lbs. Will those shox work for both stock and lenghthened front arms?
He is also shipping me the pipe and card 20mm. I plan to remove head gasket for starters! and go with 4 rollers!
Also, after cleaning the inside of the tranny area and pulling the front clutch apart, i had to scoop and clean and....finally its clean all 6 rollers had flat spots....My question ... the movable drive face plate and movable face have small groove from the rollers not rolling, do I need to sand those out or replace those parts when replace the 4 new stock rollers?
Is the back clutch worth my time, I will be driving on steep property just for fun, no racing!!! Hopefully with my 4 year old in my lap!
The front brakes really suk, can we all put our resources together and come up with a hyd mod!
I would like to send my motor out, I was thinking of Arden cuz I couldn't post..... but what I really want for x-mas is a JMM!!!!
Sincerely,With respect

Welcome to the forums Rylo.
Well, lets see if I have a million answers.
First off, who is Arden? You mean Arlan from LRD??
Anyways....
1)Forget about that 20mm carb. It don't help nearly as much as ppl think. We took one off for this weekends TT race and put the stock carb back on and it was faster.
If it's a LRD pipe, that's OK, but other choices can be made. The stock pipe works very well especially for the type of riding you explained. The carb and pipe you don't need will cost almost as much as the motor you do need.
2) The shocks will fit stock or extended a-arms, but the shock set-up will be different because of the extended a-arms.
3)Sand the grooves out of the sliding face if it's "slightly" grooved. If grooved heavy, buy another ($35-40). Buy a new plate that covers the rollers. Put just a dab of grease on each roller. Filling up the hub like zuki does is about impossible and not needed.
4)rear clutch:: removing some weight will help but for your type of riding indeed may not be needed.. Read above post reply. Do like he did if you want to mod the rear shoes. If you do not have access to a scale then don't touch em.
5)the front brakes usually get bound up where the pin goes thru the backing plate. Remove and grease. Other than that, I've not had the need to do any inventing for the front as they seem to work fine.
6)Removing the head gasket is OK, If you have access to a lathe or mill, take .030 off the head and use the gasket.
