650 help

My '04 went to A/C dealer July 5th, was runnning on one cylinder, popping out the carb, would not idle.
Compression on #2 was at 30 psi, tore it apart and found broken ring. Replaced the ring under warranty but the motor does not sound the same, not smooth, they said they have checked timing, valves, carbs, everything they could check and found nothing. 9/03 dealer said front motor mount was not tighten, went down to check it , still the same. told them I want a new motor or new bike. I will be talking with them on Tuesday. Even had them bring out another bike to compare to, that one sounds right and feels right. The mechanic said I cannot compare a new motor to one that has 500 miles on it which mine does.

He might be right, except the one with 500 miles should run better than the new one. Mine does. It has 650 miles and runs better than ever. Stick to your guns and make them give you a proper motor. There is no sweeter running or sounding motor than that 650 when it is working well.

That's what I'm trying to tell these guys about the sound and smoothness. I rode the bike for over 500 miles, you get to know the sound and feel of the motor quite well. I think your right Bear4570. Keep the comments comming 'cause I going to have the Service Manager and the Owner of Central Oregon Workensport bring this up on their computer. Thanks again.

I just turned over 1960 miles on my '04 650 last weekend and it is still running smoother than when it was new. It continued to run smoother with use from 0 to about 500 miles or so and has stayed the same since. I replaced a belt that my son burned pushing dirt with the plow at about 1500 miles. And now the battery seems to be giving up. Other than that, it has had no problems. If they repaired your engine correctly it should at least run as smoothly as a new one.

so what caused the ring to break in the first place?
is it still under warranty? if not, did you have to pay for the reapir?
did you authorize them to look further when you found the engine rough?
and is it a rough engine, or just a hesitation on launch?
these could be very similar problems....
OH, as for an engine replacement, you are of course aware that is up to Arctic Cat, not the dealer. Have you contacted them?
I hear so much dealer bashing I'd like to hear how this one works out....I work for the competition hehe.

Often after a rebuild or installing a new cam people often hear valve noise that they havn't before I know your machine is stk. but the vlaves shoudl of been adjusted and when this happens you may hear noise that you havn' t heard before. I'm not sticking up for anyone hear just don't like to see fingers get pointed unless you know exactlly whats going on. Does your machien just sound different or does it not perform as well? Have you ran or raced aginst anyone you rode with before to compare performance?

Well they called me up on Saturday to say its done for the forth time. Said they forgot to tighten the front motor mount, still runs the same.....Yes it is under warranty and covered, no they did not ask to go deeper and they did not have an explanation for the ring breakage. I talked to the GM and she said she will have a look at it also. She said she could not tell the difference nor could the other 5 people that work for her. She also came back with that response of it has 500 miles on so its not going to sound the same. The quad sounded "normal" the day before ring broke just like all the other previous days I used it.
The best way I can decribe it is like the cam has a flat spot on it. Like one cylinder is firing funny at 0 to an 1/8th throttle. Just not a smooth response, sound does not have that great purr anymore, more choppy. They said they have checked timing, carbs, valves, compression is within 5lbs and all are on mark. Yes, the power is there with 1/4 throttle on up, but still does not sound right.
Talked with the GM again today and the conclusion is to bring out the artic cat rep.
Thanks again

sounds to me like a good idea to bring in the factory rep, after all, THEY built the thing, not the dealer.....the dealer is stuck with trying to keep you happy while he is limited by the factory....it can be a tough job! Hang on and see what happens....can it be ridden the way it is? If so, ride it! summer's a wastin man!
