04.5 SP 500 Won't Start????? Rescuer had to be rescued :(
#1
Work for local EMS and looking for some lost hikers tonight. Been in the woods for 3-4 hours and everything was going fine. hikers had been found and we were preparing to exit the woods, approx. 2 miles in the trail. ATV was idling and I pulled it into reverse to turn and head for home. Just as my finger grazed the throttle, DEAD it went, like I had cut off the switch, which I hadn't of coarse. Tried to start it, nothing, motor would crank and turn over but DEAD.
Figured it had flooded for unknown some reason, even though we didn't smell gas, but we let it set approx 10 minutes, still nothing. Tried choke, no choke, nothing, like the motor was not getting a drop of gas. Starter would turn, lights and all work.
How embarrassing was this. The lost hiker had to get off and walk because the rescuer's less than a year old less than 300 miles on it ATV was dead. Had to get pulled out of the woods, thought the ride might shake things up, still nothing. Starter turns motor, but it will not fire at all. Plenty of gas, over half a tank, fresh gas, gas **** was on. I'll check the spark plug and fuel filter in the morning, but wanted to get this post on here ASAP when I got home. The thing had run perfect all night, pulled into reverse, didn't get time for the machine to move, barely had pushed the throttle at all, and that was all she wrote. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Any recalls anyone knows about? It's 5 AM and I'm too tired to search for them right now. Thanks for the help.

Judging from the milage on your machine I would guess that it is the "plug wire pinched between the fuel tank and the frame" problem and your not getting any fire. Many of the 04.5's had this problem and was just a matter of rerouting the wire. Pull the front plastic hood off and you will see the coil on the right side. Pull on the plug wire to see if it is pinched and if so you might have to loosen the fuel tank to get it out. Dealer should replace it at no charge becaues it is a know problem. Let us know how you make out......

NBsportsman is right. My buddy just had the exact same problem. We figured it had somthing to do with the coil. He droped it off at the dealer and even though the warranty was over it was fixed at no charge.

Just got home from the dealer. Plug wire looked like it had been grabbed by a set of Vise Grips. When I called the dealer and explained, he knew right away what was wrong. Coarse, he had it back in January and knew about the recall, but didn't fix it, kind of aggravating, but he got me right in, hour drive to him, 2 minute fix, hour back home, but it's running again!!!! No, he did it under the recall, said even though it's out of warranty, it was a recall issue, so it was a free repair. He really is a great dealer, I guess I shouldn't have downed him like I did. I have been very pleased with all his work so far, he has treated me really good. Yes, it was a free repair.
