Gettin' Ready For Winter
#1
Just wondering if anyoune has used the engine oil warmers / block heaters for cold weather use. I'm using mine for plowing and am thinking it's a good idea to keep the engine warm before starting it. When it's 10 below out, it would probably start easier too. Any Comments?

I wouldn't worry about the heater either, my 98 Sp500 never failed to start even at -20 deg. I would on the other hand remember to put the trickle charger on the beast if I used the winch to raise and lower the plow! Especially if your running your lights also, the charging system doesn't always keep up to the constant winch usage and lower rpms.

I would'nt dare start it in the winter with temps. below 40 degrees without rejetting the carb with 250 to 260 main jets. Depending on how cold it gets where you live it would'nt hurt also to get a colder plug.
Two strokes are touchy to cold weather I hope this information helps ya before you go for a trail ride one freezing cold day and your machine descides it whats to seize up.

scramdaddy400, what would you recomend for temps to about -15 deg? I've played with the jetting already, with my mods I run about 2 sizes under stock. The reeds richen things up a bit. I also already removed the pipe for winter use. I know I'm plenty rich at forty with a 220 main jet. I just wish it would get cold and stay there! I'm getting pretty good at jetting thou. 70 one weekend 40 the next you know the story.

Ya, I get your drift with the temps. I'm not to thrilled with mother natures head games too, LOL.
Your machine basically has the same engine as mine in it and if you say your machine is running rich on a 220 main at 40 degrees. that sounds right being your machine is modified.
Looking at the mods. you have I would recommend running a 250 main jet, and move to a colder plug.
For your stocky a 270 main jet and a colder plug is the way to go. The jetting may sound a bite high but the stocky is'nt getting as much fuel to the engine as modified one.
GOOD LUCK

MNXPLORER; When ever we put pipes on our sleds we generally also richen it up with a main jet one or two sizes bigger. The main thing to do is keep an eye on your spark plugs as the weather gets colder. You want the plug to be a light brown to coffee color. After a wide open blast hit your kill switch and let off the throttle and then read your plug color. If it is black and oily or sooty ,jet down , if its white, push it home and jet up a couple sizes. Good luck and let it snow!

I have a set of jets running from 220 to 270 for winter i should have my scram back on wed it has a new moter now couse it overheated complete topend including the head and cylinder i will start running a 250 to break it in again also really let them warm up good when it is cold. Put your hand on the cylinder and if it is good and warm then it is ok to run if not WAIT till it is.
