Anyone run piston/cams without carb upgrade? Looking for gains with piston/cams
#1
I am looking for yet more power out of my DS. A buddy's yfz has head porting, hmf, the high velocity intake (no box, just a nice tube with a KN on the end of it) and the cam mod. He is soon looking to get a new carb and -6 flywheel, so I need to make sure I stay ahead of him.
With my stock carb, my ported intake, KN (in box, lid on) open HMF we are perfectly neck and neck (sometimes a half quad length variation depending on who gets the best holeshot).
I currently do have the 46 hv, but it is not tuned right now, so it only gave me one bike length. I am a big fan of the stock carb, as I ahve spent so long tuning it, I know the ins' and outs very well.
So, my question is this, has anyone done cams/piston without a carb upgrade? What kind of gain did you get on the dyno, or bike lengths racing against a baseline bike (one you have raced before) what cams/piston are you running? I am looking into the JE with the gaskets to put compression @ 11:1 so I can still run 93) and dont know what cams yet.
For those of you who already had a new carb, what kind of gain did you see (dyno, or racing another person) with a piston and or cams?
I really want to do an engine swap (gsxr 750) but I cant fabricate it myself, and only place I know to get it done will only do the whole thing start to finish with motor included, and I just dont have the money for that. I dont want to sink the money in for a big bore or turbo either, so I am just trying to see if these mods are worth it for me or not.
Thanks for your input guys.

The gains are minimal without the carb. You have a lot more ability to bring air and fuel in but are limited by the stock carb. mine went from 42 hp with a stock carb and end cap on a stage three motor to over 50 with the addition of a tm45. Added a woods pipe for another 2 over the end cap.
