I use a 1/2 cup of diesel fuel first then follow up with Dawn dish detergent (green color). Then put in a towel and walk on it to squeeze out as much water as possible. Let it air dry thorougly before oiling again. If you don't you will create a swiss cheese effect since oil and water don't mix. Eventually the water will dry out and you will have spots with no oil on the filter.

I highly recommend getting yourself a 2nd PowerFilter and keeping it ready to go. I keep my extra in a plastic bagging so it is ready to go.

I've been cleaning mine with diesel fuel for 3 years and still using the same White Brother's PowerFilter.

If the filter is foam use kerosene. Diesel will work, but kerosene is closer to gasoline. i just cleaned mine on my 400EX with diesel and have had no problems. As far as I am concerned, and have heard, detergents will eat away at the foam so do not use Dawn. Gasoline will also do this after time but it will clean the air filter for you... I wounldn't recommend it. After you clean the filter with deisel or preferrably kerosene, spray carb cleaner and saturate the filter. Do this a couple of times if you'd like, squeezing out the excess carb cleaner each time. Then I would take an air compressor and spray from the inside outward in order to rid the filter of any remaining carb cleaner/diesel mixture. You also might want to put some filter oil on the filter once it is dried through.

I don't like using solvents (like kerosene or gasoline), because they tend to dissolve away the oil, but leave the dirt behind trapped inside the foam. My preference is PJ1 Foam Filter Cleaner Spray. It does contain some solvent, but it is combined with a detergent and forms a nice emulsion when you squeeze the filter. Rinsed out with lots of warm water, it takes the dirt out with it.
