Default Don't Feel Non

I live in Minnesota, where it is not mountainous. I recently came back from georgia in the appalacian mountains, where i took my friends V700 out to drive around. It was a very different elevation changed, and with carbs, i heard you need to change jets. what does lean mean/feel like? how do you know when to change jets and to which ones?

Lean runs a hotter, pops in exhaust and leaves the plug a white or ash color. It should be a tan color. If it runs better with the choke on or partially on, than it's lean. If it runs worse it's either good or too rich. If it's too rich, you'll get a blacker colored plug and black smoke in your exhaust. If it's rich, but not by a lot you won't get the black smoke. After a while, you'll be able to tell the difference by the smell of the exhaust. You know when a car first starts up on a cold day how the exhaust smells a little different? That's a rich smell. If it "smells" hot or metallic, that's lean. I'm not saying go around sniffing tail pipes, just that you'll get to know the smell.

yeah, i had to run it partly on choke for it to run. Also, the V force seems to take in gas at a faster rate. I just filled it up and ran it for less than an hour of non harsh riding and the gas tank was empty. Is this a result of the lean jetting for the enviorment?
