Default Winch contactor

Mine is going bad on a 2.5 model. Is there any other solenoid or "contactor" that I could use or even wire direct(I know its kinda dangerous). Brand new one is extremely expensive. Thanks

Same thing happen on mine. If you got a receipt warn will replace it free if under a year old. Mine would power out but not in, so I reveresed the wires and use free spool to let out and now have power to wind in.

Mine is over 2 yrs old. I had Napa find me a heavy duty solenoid (extended duty) for $55. Hope it works...if not the quad is insured.

use two 5 pole headlight relays and a momentary double throw single pole switch
the winches don't really draw alot of power and the relays are rated higher than the max output of your battery
I have been running a two relay setup on my 2000lbs winch for 5 years without any problem!!!!

Pardon my ignorance, but what is the 5th pin on a 5pin relay for? I've seen them before and always wondered...

Thanks.

5th pin is common with pin labeled #30 when the relay is at rest
so to wire up a winch you would put each side of the winch to pins #30
then both pins#87a would goto ground with heavy wire
both pins#87 would goto battery power with heavy wire
both pins#85 would goto ground
one pin 86 would goto one side of your switch
the other pin 86 would goto the other side of the switch and the center of the switch would goto ignition feed (live with key on only)

I tryed to follow you explanation of the 2- 5 pole relays. Let me see if I got it. 30 is to a winch terminal, 85 and 87a are grounded, 86 is to the mini rocker switch, and 87 is to 12 volts. Do I have it right? So basically only one relay activated at a time. The non used one, provides a winch motor ground between 30 and 85/87a. Do you know the amp rating for these? I am piecing together a 2.5 winch. What is the original application for this relay? I once used a 4 relay setup. when winching, I had 2 relays energized at the same time. One for power and one to ground. My setup was about $6 X 4 relays = $24. Yours sounds like much less space required. Thanks in advance for any further clarification.
