What year big red? If 83 or under, than you might wanna check the condition of the chain for rust or slack or even seize spots. If 84 or over then you could change the gear oil in the diff. A new battery, check tires for cracks and a rust free gas tank are always somethings to check for too.

Does it run? If so, obviously check for excessive smoke in the exhaust. Take it for a ride. Do the wheels turn freely? No weird grindings or rubbing sounds? Excessive shaking? Lights work? No loud clicking or knocking?
If it doesn't run, then you fewer things you can check. Go through the list that 3wheelerdude set out. Also, look for oil leaks around the head gasket and/or crankcase. See if the brakes operate smoothly and are not hung up. Make sure the gear lever moves through the gears freely. Hope this helps.

i'd drain the tank before trying to start it. see what comes out. definitely fresh oil first too. other than that just take it easy until it's nice & warmed up. sounds like a great buy.

id dump out the old gas first of all. possibly change thelug, oil, and maybe a carb kit if u wanted to be almost sure it should run. mine is an 83 and it was sitting for 6 years. dumped out old gas. new spark plug and it ran. but it ran pretty choppy so i put in a carb kit. and now it runs fine. 83 is the last year of chain. so if its 83 or older its chain. newer its a shaft drive. and could be a 250cc.
