what causes play in front sprocket?

what causes play in front sprocket?
the front sprocket on my 200sx seems to have a bit of side to side play in it ? it does not appear that the shaft moves but more that the sprocket wiggles on the shaft? i was wondering if this is normall ? or is there something wrong ? any help would be greatly apprechiated
