Default 1st quad need some help

This is the 1st quad I have ever bought. I have always used someone elses until now. I bought it off of my uncle VERY cheap. SO I wasn't to worried about the condition. He has no idea the year or engine size. He bought it used too.

I am just guessing but I would say it is maybe a 1998 and it is a Honda TRX 250

I found the codes TRX-250Y
and code R 232 on it.

Any help as to what year or any other information about it ?

I also need to replace one of the front wheel bearings I think. The wheel is can move on the hub. The Ball joints and the tie rod ends look ok . Also on of rear wheel bearings looks worn .. I can move the rear wheel around on the axle

Are these hard to fix ? This thing runs great and I think I am going to enjoy fixing it up ... How much is new plastic ?

Thanks in advance,

BIG b

I have pictures too if needed

Default 1st quad need some help

HI, i think that it could be a number of things, the movement on the axsis is not good, may be a dealer would be able to tell you what it is exactly! although there should be a little bit of play in my 2003 250 which i have noticed so i am guessing there are worn. but i will not be replacing mine untill i need to.

from what u think i am guessing that you are right in thinking it is a 250cc as that was what my old bike had on it.

Its not a big deal, they are pressed in, and will need to be hammered or pressed out. Then when you install them, youll need a socket or something which is the correct diameter to support , and drive the od of the bearing.
Dont forget to replace the seals as well.
I just bought some wheel bearing off ebay, they were like 26 bucks, and thats bearings and seals for both sides.
You might want to buy a service manual for it too, itll go though all of the repairs like wheel bearings , and all the other repairs.
If its really sloppy, make sure the outer spacer isnt missing, sometimes referred to as the collar..

Default 1st quad need some help

I looked at is some more and the axel nut is not all the way against the outter bearing. That is where the play is .. I cannot tighten the axel nut .. Heck I can't even loosen it ... I put some PB buster on it and I am going to let it sit over night ...

Is the spacer your talking about go between the axel nut and the bearing ? There looks like there is a collar that protrudes past the nut about 1/4 inch but it is not enough to sit against the wheel bearing ..

Thanks for all the help so far ,
BIG b

If this link doesnt work, go the the ronnies banner at the top of the page, and go into the atv parts area, then the honda, 1998, and trx250. When the page comes up, look for front wheel, and itll have a diagram of whats supposed to be there.

ronnies

If the front wheel is sloppy. most likely the part which has #2 on it is missing. The outside nut, is supposed to tighten the collar, both inner diamaters of the bearings, the spacer between the bearings, and the collar on the inside too, (it appears there are two #2 in each front) to the spindle. If any of those are missing...it wont be posible to tighten.

At least it wont be expensive to fix, they list the collar at a buck 89.
If its been run for any length of time with them missing, the bearings are shot, and will need replacing.
Once you get all the pieces, and install them, itll be as good as new.

Thanks for the link to Ronnies.

I found my model year on the frame. It is a 2000 TRX 250. Wich I belive is a HONDA FOURTRAX RECON.

The drawing shows that the axle nut is 18mm. THat is not right It is just over 1" big. What is the actual size ??

Also can someone ginve me step by step on how to replace the wheel bearings ? How can I tell if my spindle needs replaced ?

Can I heat the axle nut to remove it ? It is on ther very well ...

ALl the components look like they are in place. Just looks like the wheel bearing is bad ? Maybe the spindle worn ? What size of bearings do I need? I ask this because the axle nut size is wrong on the drawing .. would the bearing be wrong too ? Is there an onlne place IO can look at a service manual ?

THanks

Nuts and bolts and other threaded fasteners are itentified by the threads, not the hex size. The 18 mm is the thread diameter, not the size of wrench to use on it.
Once the cotter pin is removed, the nut should just unscrew. If someone really jammed it on there, then try a 6 point socket, and a johnson bar.
You can buy the kit for wheel bearing and seals at most places that sell atv honda parts, or even ebay.
The spindle should be fine, but if the new bearing doesnt fit right, or the spindle has turned color from heat...then it might be time to replace it. If you have a queation as to if its good or not, youll have to have someone who is a mechanic look at it. Im guessing its still good.
If you buy the clymers, or honda serice manual...they have very detailed procedures for doing almost all the repairs, they are like 25 bucks, and well worth the price. Sometimes it hard to describe repairing things with out pictures...and those books have lots of pictures and specs.

Default 1st quad need some help

Thanks for the info. I fianally got the axle nut off ... I am going to order the clymer repair maual too. Just another quick question .. How do I get the HUB(with the wheel studs) off ? It seems to be on there pretty good..

DO I have to remove the spindle from the front end to remove the bearings ?

How can I hammer these bearings off without hitting the spindle and damaging it ?

Is this the right manual to order ?
http://www.themotorbookstore.com/clymhontrfou.html

I have a 2000 Honda TRX 250Y.

What is the Y and is mine considered a RECON or what ?

Thanks,
Branden
