Hey guys-
I have the engine out of my 97 Scrambler right now with the top end pulled off. I am changing the counterbalancer lube, but noticed that when it is draining, the fluid that the connecting rod rotates into doesn't drain with it. The CB fluid was nearly black, but the crankcase fluid is brown. Is there a drain plug for the crankcase lube? What type of lube will I need to fill it with and how much? I couldn't find any info in my FSM. Thanks!

 

The counterbalance oil is totally seperate from the crankcase.Yes there is a drain for the crankcase it is at the bottom toward the clutch side.You don't have any oil that goes into the crankcase,it is controlled by the oil injector or thru the premix.Hope this helps.

 

CED has state you how it is designed,as far the counter balance
oil color,i highly suggest you to spray good quality lube through it
before refill the case to the dip stick level,cauze the CB is the major
part that wear out and hold the engine together.

Thanks for the reply, but I'm a little confused now. With the cylinder off the engine, I could see the crankcase of my engine is filled with a brownish oil about 2" below the base gasket. Probably about 8 ounces of oil in the crankcase. I'm almost positive it's not injector oil. Are you saying I don't need to refill the crankcase with oil?

 

You are correct,the only oil that has to be filled is the counter balancer and the tranny.And if you have the injection still hooked up,you will have to fill the oil reservoir tank.The crank usually has some residue in it from running,because some of it does not get burned,that is what keeps the bearings lubed inside the crankcase,just put everything back together and you will be ok.

Thanks. I was a little concerned since I couldn't find a place to drain the crankcase oil...must have just missed the drain screw. I understand that not all the injection oil will get burnt off. Apparently it won't hurt to drain whatever oil is currently in the crankcase, correct? Also, I'm eliminating the oil injection since I heard it becomes inadequate above 55 or so horsepower. I'll be running a pipe, porting, reeds, and carb mounted K&N, so I'll be satisfied running the premix. Now, if I could just figure out what to do with my cylinder since it is already bored .120" over...resleeve or find another cylinder?

 

If it is ported already,just resleeve it.
