Default 00' SP 500 trani be put in '97 500 Explorer?

I broke some parts inside my trani that are going to cost about $450 to replace. I can buy a 00' Sportsman 500 trani complete for a lot less than this. Will the 00' Sportsman 500 trani work in my '97 500 Explorer?

Pretty sure you can. only diff. is the shafts. you would either have to convert to cv axles or change the gear in the tranny so you can put the uv axles back in. Hope that gear ain't what you broke.

The 100 tooth gear is what I broke. Is this the gear you are talking about?

NOPE. Its a 60 tooth sprocket that is splined on each side for the shafts. it is what the axles hook to (so to speak).

I don't mean to sound stupid but what does uv & cv stand for in reference to the axles?
