z400 known problems???
#1
I have searched the forum and couldn't really find all the information I want, so I'll ask. I just purchased a 2003 z400 off of ebay at what I think was a good deal $3,000. Is that a good price for one that's in good shape? What are the known problems for this model year? I have read that the frame cracks near the front shock mount, is this correct? They also had bad axles in the early ones, how can I tell if this axle is still the bad one? What are some other known problems for this year? What else should I look out for with this bike? I got this for my soon to be wife, and hopefully she won't be able to beat me on my banshee

If its in good shape I'd say you got a great deal. If you aren't sure on it's maintenance history I would change your coolant, oil, filter, and clean the air filter. The frame cracking/breaking at the shock mounts is a known problem but can be remedied by installing some gussets at know week points. I believe the upper front shock mounts is the most common problem. I have a 2003 I bought new in August of 2004. I recently noticed some "cracking" in the paint at the upper shock mounts. After looking in some forums, it sounds like the frame flexes, causing the frame to crack. I'm not overly concerned, but I am going to get some gussets welded on before too long. I haven't heard anything about the axle. The only problem I've had with mine is the bolts holding the plastic on coming loose. I lost one or two of them so I just bought some 10mm (I think) bolts to keep on hand in case they do come out and I try to remember to check them occassionally. I ride the dunes almost exclusively, but do an occassional trail ride. I ride hard but am not a maniac. I do a little jumping but nothing real big. I go out about 8 to 12 times a year.
