Default Raptor 660 starter problem

My friend just bought a 2002 raptor and the starter turns over just fine but it is not catching on nothing.

Is this the one-way assyembley wore out? I looked on Ronnies.com and that was $179.

We took off the side cover and the large gear that is in the crank case will turn easly but will not catch on nothing, so I am assuming that the one-way is the problem. Am I right?

Can we fix that in our shop with common hand tools or does it take special tools or skills to fix?

Thanks for the help.
Derek

www.raptortranny.com has all the information you need to change the one-way. That does sound like your problem, and it'll happen again if you buy an oem replacement one-way. You need one from L&A designs, they are sold by quite a few companies.

The one-way is the culprite. (At least it sounds like it). I replace mine on my old raptor with a stock one and it only lasted about one year, then I had to replace it again. I suggest purchasing an after-market one-way, such as the one suggested by maddog56 (L&A).

I hate reading about these issues, it makes me worried that mine will go the next time I start up my Rappy. However, I have heard conflicting stories that in 04 this problem was solved. Can anyone confirm or deny that? I am lookin at gettin a stage 1 cam and head work, but if this starter issue is around the corner for me, I might buy the one-way before it goes out. Thanks for your input.

Definitly sounds like the one way I just put a L&A Design in mine bought the kit from RSPconcepts.comRSP Concepts it came with gaskets, idler gear, and the one way. Very easy to install I used the temporary fix a couple of times using the rubber O-ring, just got tired of having to redo it. RaptorTranny has all the information that you need to replace it.

The one-way was never solved. They beefed it up in 04 but it still fails about as easily as the 02-03 setup. My suggestion is to replace it as soon as you start hearing it spin free. Any riding you do after that leaves much more of a chance that the starter clutch will disintegrate into your oil, start dropping large fragments, or send a few busted bolts flying around your case.
