Default Wheels 12" VS 14"

Do 14" rims and tires weight more or less that 12" rims and tires? Of course I am talking about the same wheel and tire combo just different size rims. Thanks for your help.

Default Wheels 12" VS 14"

I just returned my 14" Polaris/Vision alloy wheel and 26" Kenda Bounty Hunter tire package back to Polaris for a warranty refund. Basically....I could not keep the tires from breaking their beads and going flat. It was happening virtually every time I rode and I relate this to the rough terrain, ruts, roots and rocks etc... on my trails and the 14" rim in combination with the 26" Kenda Bounty Hunter tires. Other than breaking the beads and going flat all the time.......the performance was very good.

I'm waiting on my new 12"x26" ITP Type 7 wheels/Mudlite XTRs. I will not go with the 14" rims again.

As far as weight goes.....I think every wheel/tire package needs to be looked at separately. You could have nice light 12" or 14" aluminum rims.....but have some big heavy 6-ply beastly mud tires. Weight varies quite a bit on the tires themselves.....not just rims. As far as "apples to apples" same wheel/tire package 12" vs 14" weight???......I don't know but suspect it will vary considerably depending upon the type of tire.

I am running itp type 7 wheels and 27 inch xtrs on my 800.I have had zero problems with them, itp says these rims are some of the lightest made. I think the tires are great also but im not sure how much they weigh.

I've run both, look at photos. I definately prefer the 12 inch set-up....dig better, ride much smoother. However my 14 inch setup was lighter than my 12's.

Default Wheels 12" VS 14"

I have run a number of different combinations....

You have heard it all before... but it depends on the riding you do...
I have had problems with every tire package I have tried.... except!
The ITP Type 7 14" rims and the ITP Tires...

Why?

Less Sidewall! More support in the corners....

I am an aggressive rider...

I have had:
26" mudrunners.... Very stiff ride... will pull you through the mud.... but expect it to pop off the bead sooner or later.
Stock tires on the 03 Sportsman 700... Very nice tire! Likes to leak and too much sidewall exposed!
Stock tires on my 04.5 700 EFI Radials have nice hard pack ride, but sidewall issues made me sell them......
Stock tires on my 05 800 EFI with aluminum rims... I have put them on my 04.5 700 EFI... with sidewall damage...but nice traction and dependable.
Had the ITP 14" type 7 rims and ITP tires on my 05 800 and kept them on my 06 800 EFI LE and will keep them!
I have han no tire leaks, no punctures, no sign of wear, Nothing! The only thing I can say bad about them... is they don't balance very well, and they slow the machines top end down.

Simply put... the 14" ITP set-up I have has been the best tire and rim combo I have purchased so far!

My 2 cents!

Jon

I have the 14" Polaris/vision rims with bounty hunter tires on both our quads. They do handle much better than the stock tires and rims. We haven't had a problem with them breaking the beads at all and we ride some pretty rough terrain. I have bent one pretty bad and cracked it a little when straightening it but I do like them and will order a new rim and then straighten and weld up the one I bent as I can see that they aren't the strongest and expect it to happen sometime again in the future.
