Remove the little red plugs on the front wheels to access the brake adjusters. There are two adjusters on each wheel. Tighten the shoes up to the drum and then back the adjusters off three notches.

The shoes will wear down w/ use which is why you need to adjust them. When you remove the red plugs, check the brake shoe thickness. If there is still brake material on the shoes, adjust them.

when looking through the hole, make sure u don't see water and mud in there, if you do, the adjustment will do nothing, the brakes will have to be pulled and cleaned

The recon's brakes need to be adjusted regularly, but the shoes will be fine on a 2004. The original brake shoes were still on my recon when I traded it in, and it was 5 years old at the time. If you have the owner's manual look it up, it shows you how to adjust them.

You can only adjust so far. The rubber brake lines don't help. Upgrade to stainless lines lol.

The front brakes lick. They are merely adequate at best. Why do you need to stop anyway??
