Default Will my 2WD do the job? vs the 4WD

Fellas:
I recently grabbed a 2WD Fourtrax 300(1993). I havent had a chance to go to any good locations to ride, but wondered will my model suffice for moderate terrain.

THANKS

Moderate terrain? yes, you would be surprised what you can do with 2wd.

Yes, you will be fine. The deeper, gooey mud is going to be a no no unless you like pushing, shoving, lifting, and winching. Otherwise, the 2wd can go 80% of the places a 4x4 can.

I own the '96 version of your bike. I'm also a triker from way back, and there ain't no 4wd trikes!
As stated above, you will be able to go most places a 4wd goes.
The key is to pick your spots. If you plan to follow the Bombi 800 through the deepest part of the muck hole, then you could have issues. But even most of the big evil holes have kinder, gentler ways around them. Only rarely will you find yourself on the bad end of the tow rope -- if you know how to read a mud hole and react accordingly.
2WDs are nimble, easy on gas, fun, fast and if you can avoid the urge to bury it to the handlebars, you will be fine almost all of the time.
A great set of rear tires will serve you well -- but that's a whole other debate!
Enjoy!

I have to disagree, while ridding my wife would drive my 4x4 rancher while I drove a Recon and a buddy on YFZ in quite a few spots (not muddy) we had to get off and push the quads while the 4x4 ran right through it.
I was amzed the 2wd drives units did so poorly on the various terrain. Of course that was only 10 % of thime we got stuck but we did not try anything to techincal either cause we knew the limits of the 2wd.

Climbing I think 4wd is superior and you wont need to get "full speed" to make it up.

Go out and ride the tires off it, and decide for yourself! My experience with the 2wd Rancher is that it is a super little machine. It is 35 pounds lighter than the 4wd, and that 35 pounds is over the front axle where it does the most harm. Of course, snow and mud is where the difference will be most apearent.

snow aND mud is a different story, it takes alot of work and good tires to help in mud(still not as good as 4x4) but snow or even mud i guess chains will help alot(still no 4x4)as far as hills , ihave made it up ALL the 4x4 have

2wd works fine but if you get stuck on the way in backing out alone aint gonna happen, i have a rancher 400at 4x4 and the only time i have it in 2wd is for paved road. 4X4 would have been worth the extra $$$
