400 ex front shocks squeeking bad...why?
#1
I can't figure out why my front shocks are squeeking so bad. I've tried spraying some WD-40 up the front shock area and that did nothing... I have good compression in my springs...what could possibly be making so much noise?

Hey it's no big deal. Mine did the same thing and drove me nuts also. Jack up the quad from the front frame and then remove the front shocks. The lower bushings will get dry and will need lubed with wheel bearing grease. There will be a spacer that pushes out by hand on the lower bushing. Remove and lube and reinstall. If you notice to much play in the lower bushing it will need replaced. That also is no big deal. You will need to get the brass bushing, spacer, and two seals per lower shock. You can do this yourself if you have a bench vise and the right size sockets to press the brass bushing out and back in.The brass bushing will have a cross hatch pattern to it and will be worn smooth on one or two spots if bad. The top bushing can also get play in it but usually does not make noise. That is a solid bushing and is all one( no spacer). Good luck and let me know how this works out for you!

Lube the bolts that hold the shock on - the ones on the lower A-Arms. I've seen many a machine that will squeak because of this. It's odd as the shock isn't supposed to move around this bolt. Try it.
