I have an '03 KFX50. It just started smoking terribly, oil leaking where exhaust mates to exhaust port, and no power. Is this carb problem?

You may have a head gasket that went bad. If you clean it off with degreaser or spray it with brake clean can you see where exactly it is comming out? Sounds like you got some good years out of the little 50. They are pretty tough. If you need parts Raceway can help.

Thanks. I will give it a try to see if I can detect the a leak in the head gasket. Just fyi-it went bad after my boy spent a lot of time in deep mud and standing water.

If he was in water it may have cracked because of the cold water and hot motor. Does it still run?

Head gasket and cylinder gasket look perfect! Could it be rings? There are not a tremendous amount of hours on this atv. Could dirt during recent mudding gotten into cylinder and blown the rings?

Yes, it runs but no power, hard to keep it going, and lot of smoke out exhaust. It seem there is just too much oil in crankcase/cylinder and excess is coming out at cylinder connector to exhaust. Could it be bad oil pump?

There is no oil pump. It is splash lubricated. It could be that it took on water and the crank case is over full. I would drain the oil and refill it.

Great thought!!!!! That is a good bet that their was a water fill. I will drain and refill tomorrow. Relative to the oil pump, I see on that diagrams on Kawasaki.com that there is a cam (not oil pump) to allow the 2-cycle oil to enter the crankcase. Thanks!

Im sorry I was thinking it was a 4 stroke. I have a KMX 50 not KFX 50. If the exhaust is loose it will have no power, if the pump is bad it may be injecting too much oil. Also check the air filter to make sure it is not plugged with mud. This will also make it run bad. I can almost bet is either has water in the case or the filter is clogged.

I cleaned the air filter earlier today since I took the carb all apart and cleaned it. It ran exactly the same after the carb/filter cleaning. By the way, how can water get in the case? I will let you know on the results of the tasks tomorrow!!!
