Default 01 TRX450S No Neutral light Help

I have an 01 trx450s The battery is good.
the neutral light will not come on. I jumped the solenoid and it starts up.
It will run and shift through all the gears up and down but will not go into neutral or reverse for that matter.
When you push down on the shifter it feels like you're in 5th gear still trying to find 6th.
There's just nothing there.
I don't think it's a neutral safety switch because the bike won't go into neutral. I don't know where the switch is.
If anyone could explain where the easiest access to the shift drum may be. I was thinking maybe the piece on the end of the drum is messed up and the hook that is connected to the shifter isn't catching anything to make the gears shift into neutral.

Thanks

Stand the machine up on the rear rack and remove the front engine cover. Under the change clutch is the external shift mechanism. Remove all the parts and inspect. The front part of the shift drum will be exposed when you remove the shift mechanism parts.

Great
I was hoping there was a way to do it without taking the motor completely out.
I'll give it a shot in the morning.
Thanks
