I say always get a new machine, unless you don't have any other choice. In the long run, a used machine will often cost you more after you add up the reparis, than a new one will.

If the EX has a piston, cam, etc., you know they have been into the engine at least a few times, and you don't have any idea what was done and how high quality the work was! Not to mention other issues like was the oil changed at a reasonable interval???

With the new machine, you are starting with a clean slate!

If the 400ex didn't have the engine cracked open I would say think about buying the EX, but I don't like buying anything with to many mods on them. That just means they run their stuff hard.

If you can afford it, I'd go with the 700R
