Default 05 sportsman battery dies while sitting

I have a 2005 Polaris Sportsman 500. After sitting for about a month I discovered the battery was dead. I could not get it to recharge, so I bought a new battery. A week later I went riding and everything was great. Then after sitting for 6 days, the battery was completely dead again. Is there anything that would continue to draw enough power to kill the battery, even when the key if removed? Not sure if it is important, but as soon as I start it with a jumper battery pack, the fan comes on and I get a message that the engine is hot, even though it really is not. I suppose I could put a disconnect on the battery terminal, but I would really prefer to find and fix the problem correctly.
