Default Results of lighter rear tires and wheels?

I recently got my stock bore Baja back from the builder and now i am in the process of doing some tweaking here and there and i have a few ideas for better performance i would like to get some input on. I went on my first two rides with 9 paddle extremes on red label wheels that weigh in at 16 lbs each but i have eight paddle Regular haulers on red label wheels that are just under 13 lbs, would the 3 lbs per tire and wheel loss in rotating mass be very noticeable in a good way?I am also considering the 520 chain conversion but after searching back posts i am not sure if the couple of pounds saved would help much ,any first hand experience?I dont want to get too extreme with total weight loss but lighteneing the rotating mass would seem to be a good pursuit so any ideas in that area would be appreciated. My Baja looks totally stock with the exception of my ODP disced end cap but it is way different than stock performance wise and any thing that will make it just a little faster is what i am after.I would like to add that the HPR HR3 cams make a stock bore a very fun and torquey ride!!

I don't think 8 paddle are appropriate on the Oregon coast. I was underpaddled with 9 on 10" wheels on my stock bore over here. I would seriously look at the 520 conversion if I were you and I would at minimum get some DS hubs machined for a Yamaha bolt pattern so you can run 8" wheels with bead to bead 22" tires. I would go with 9 paddle with the bead to bead if you are stock swingarm. Also, depending on your size, don't run too low of gears. That is a major problem that people struggle with. You need to be a big guy to need really low gears. If you are under 250 lbs, I would go 16/40 with those torquey cams. If you are around 300 lbs you might need to run 15/40 or 16/42.

You wouldn't believe how much 8" wheels with bead to bead tires gained me Remember the bead to bead are not triple buffs. They look just like them but they are tuff enough to trail and they hold their air. I think mine weigh about 8 lbs ea. but the weight is only part of it. The big thing is sidewall flex with proper tire pressure. Hook up is instant!

Ok, that is enough, lol. Can't have you beating me up the hill, now.

DSNUT.You may be right about the 8 paddle not being enough for my Baja but i will explain my theory.I am sure that the 9 paddle extreme will get me out of the hole quicker but the 8 paddle may let my motor get into its power quicker since it will allow more wheelspin at takeoff and all through the gears.I am very impressed with the way the power comes on with the HR3 cams and maybe more wheelspin will enhance their performance but then again my theory may get blown out of the water after my first run.I think this stock bore motor has a lot of potential and now it will be up to me to get the most out of it.We wil be at Florence again this saturday so maybe we will see you out there.

I have an interest in making that DS of yours outrun the Raptor. I think it can be done........... I will come over in the afternoon but we will need to communicate this time since I am making the drive just to see you guys. PM me with your number if you like

DSNUT-If you want to meet at the (new) comp hill at Florence just say when and we will be there.I would be interested to hear any ideas you might have for the Baja.I believe that the Baja will eventually be able to keep up with my Raptor but it will take some doing. My Baja looks like a typical Baja but my Raptor is easy to spot with the silver plastic and eyeball haedlight covers.

Where are you guys staging? I might need a hand loading my bike up at the end of the day I could make it to the race hill by 2:30. I might be able to get Fryguy to come with me. Then I could stage anywhere

Looking forward to it.

We will be in the Top parking area at the south jetty.2:30 would work for me and that would give me some time to figure out my tire situation. If you will need help loading up at the end of the day that would be no problem.I would be curious to see what you think of the way my stock bore runs.My Raptor does very well with me on it but with me being 230-235 lbs a lighter rider could really get some results.Hopefully the wind wont be quite so intense as it was last Sunday, that ceases to be fun after a while.
