Default tach and rpm's help

I was riding with a freind a couple weeks ago and actually looked at the tach at top speeds. I have wondered if my cdi was aftermarket because it is hard wired and I bought it this way. Anyway I was drag racing against my freinds banshee several times and noticed that the tach was reading between 8800-9000 rpm at top speed. It seemed to pull pretty good up to that point. It would'nt go any faster than 9000 rpm topped out. I normally don't go that fast but i was wanting to see just how far it would go. So I am wondering if this would be normal or if my tach is reading wrong. My modds are posted except the tm45 is'nt on yet. By the way my freind is putting pipes and reeds in his banshee because he does'nt want to get beat by me anymore, lol, his is stock except vito pistons, but I even kill him outta the hole. I know the piston is a flat top and I beleive the engine is bone stock. So is this tach reading right? Sorry if it seems like a dumb question but I am curious. Thanks, RUSS

Default tach and rpm's help

the stock cdi limit if memory serves is like 7900 now I think? I know it definitely is not 9000. old model ds's prior to baja version was 7200, that really blew. if you are hitting 9K it must be aftermarket cdi, the tach gets its signal from the coil signal, its unlikely it is reading wrong, possible I guess but unlikely I would think

your cdi is hardwired? meaning no plug in about 6 inches from the box? why in the world would somebody do that, it must have been aftermarket, probably a RWR cdi cause a mod is required of the plug-in to accomidate the new style plug on baja and later models since the cdi was designed for the old model plug without tach. somebody must have rigged it or something, did you get the bike used I take it?

Default tach and rpm's help

Yes I bought it this way. I remember awhile back when I first got on here, that I asked about it but did'nt get the question resolved. The wires are about 6" away from the box I think. The wires do not match so I know it was wired like this on purpose. There was a green wire that was unused on the cdi, I think this meant somethin but still not sure. The ds is a 03 baja and there is no indication on the cdi of what it is. I bought this quad from a guy that bought it from a insurance company as a theft recovery and he knew nothing about it. It was a eye sore when I bought it, but it turned out pretty decent. I was just wanting to make sure that what I was seeing would be normal for a stock ds with a aftermarket cdi, or if the tach was reading right. I thought I read somewhere on here that a stock ds would'nt pull beyond the stock cdi rev limit even with a aftermarket cdi, and mine pulled around 9000rpm in 5th wide open, of course on a flat road. Thanks guys. RUSS
