I need to install a tachometer on my 400 so I can setup the clutch.
I dont want to install those digital tachs because I think they are no good for setting up a machine. I was wondering what type of tach would work? Do the tachs have to be hooked up through the lighting coil? Let me know what you's are running. Thanks

You can use in auto tach can be set for four cylinder use. I use a sun tach. A 2 inch tach is fine for clutching set uo. Let me know if you need info on hooking it up. its is easy

An automotive tach can be used, but a cheap tach won't last due to the vibration. Connect the tachometer trigger wire into the yellow / red wire, the power wire into a switched 12V positive. Set the tach for 4 Cylinders and it will read properly.

I just got a Polaris tach from a sled and connected it to the altenator on my 400. I don't remember what the pulse count was, so you may have to research that a little, but it works great and takes the abuse of being mounted on the machine full time.

Two pulses per revolution on a 400 Scrambler. The yellow / red wire is the tach pulse / trigger wire.
If you removed or disabled the reverse rev limiter, you have a yellow / red wire available.
