Anyone know anything about this bike?

Hi All,
Im new here and looking for my first quad. I don't know a whole lot about them and am just looking for something cheap to get me started.
I've found one in my local paper for sale, however the owner has not ridden it for a long time and doesnt seem to know a lot about it.
He says its a 1986 Honda TRX 250. It's four stroke, 5 speed, and no reverse.
I can't seem to find any information on the net; does anyone know anything about these bikes? are they more suited to a farm , or are they a sports bike? What kind of top speed do they have?
I'm hoping it's a decent atv to learn on! I'd enclose a picture, but i cant seem to work out how. Thanks!

well if it is in fact a 250R, its not a four stroke. and 250Rs are highley respected in the MX racing world...highly modifiable, very quick and nimble bikes...BUT like all two stokes, highley unreliable and you will be rebuilding it every year...

and if it is some sort of 250 four stroke, ive never seen it or know anything about it, good luck...most old quads like that with an owner that knows nothing about them usually dont last long ><

I think it's the 250EX... i found a picture here

it looks like that.
Am i correct in assuming this is more a farm bike? Or would it still be reasonably sporty?
Any information would be good. What's its top speed, handling etc like.
The guy says it runs fine and doesnt blow any smoke.
He's asking $500 aussie dollars for it. Thanks!

i would call the guy up and see what model it is and make sure that its a 1986 if you do that we would be able to help you alot more and how much is 500 aussie dollars in U.S. dollars

thats all the information he knows, although it looks exactly like the one in that picture, so i would say its definetly the 250ex. He told me its a trx, he must be wrong...
500 aussie dollars is about $350 us dollars

not bad for a 'highly unreliable' 2 stroke.
my 250r went for 16yrs before its first rebuild and the guy i bought it from said that was the only rebuild he ever did. i have had it 4yrs now and not a drop in power or compression- it doesnt need a rebuild every year. its very reliable- i have NEVER had a problem with it.plus it is a handling dream. great power, perfect balance and feel. closest thing on the market today is the YFZ.
we've aslo had several banshees through the yrs since 1988, and they were reliable as well, with only 1 requiring a rebuild due to a "problem" with it sucking sand and water in the engine....
as far as this bike being a 250cc 4 stroke with no reverse im not sure about that. the only one from that year that fits the description is a 250r- no reverse, but is 2 stroke...and its not in your pic. the 250x had reverse, and would likely be an 87 model. according to the pic it is an 87 model b/c that yr the fenders were gray/red. in 1988, they were white/red.
the other bike in the pic is a utility 250 that was based on the Big Red 250 trike; i cant imagine it not having reverse when the big red had it.... which bike is the sale for???
the newer 250ex didnt appear until much later than the 80's, im thinking around 2000-2002...
