hmm.. i tihnk i've heard somone say something about this before but i forget the outcome
but um what do you mean by "hard" like it fells like the clutch isnt disengaging and engaging? or the shifter feels stuck?
how bout if you let it sit there for 10 minutes then does it fell hard still or does it soften up as if you rode it for 5 minutes?

I wouldn't fear it, I have a 2000 rancher and it's been doing it since day one and I have a zillion miles on mine. After a few minutes it's sifts smooth so hopfully you have the same luck as me.

I thought I was the only one that had this problem! My 05 Rancher won't shift from first to second or from second to third right after I start it unless I come to an almost complete stop. Then after that, smooth shifting all day.

is this a foot shift model? If so, that's quite normal. My '04 was like that, you'd take it out of the garage and it was almost impossible to shift to 2nd, then when it did go it would jerk really hard. Then it was fine after that for the rest of the day. dont worry about it, go out and enjoy it

has this shift problem been from day one ? my brother bought an 02' 350 rancher manual shift when the 02's came out and he never had any shift problem with his. his rear hand brake cable (plastic housing) would slip out of the metal sleeve at the rear end where the cable connect's to brake lever at the rear wheel. i think we solved that problem with J B weld or something like it from Auto Zone . And there was a recall to do with a tie rod end that could come apart without any warning even with easy riding but it was only on a few hundren or so before they fixed that problem i think it was a bad batch # and the factory had all their dealer's call all the 02's in to be checked. Lucky for my brother his was ok. But i would take it in and have them check out your shifter issue before your waranttee run's out, my first ATV was a 1986 Honda TRX350 Foreman 4x4 it was the one with the heavy straight axle front end with the metal gas tank under the seat. Now that quad was a tank and bullit proff i pulled everyone i rode with out of the swamps at least once with the honda. I bought an 06 ac 400 fis TRV auto feb. 7th 2006, this cat is huge i thought it looked big in the showroom but i didn't know how big it really was untill i pulled it up to the old Honda the handle bars of the honda just barely reach the head lights of the cat it has a suzuki engine and that would've been my second choice but Honda would've been # 1 i like the cat but loved the Honda ! I sold the Honda to my youngest brother and he ride's it everyday, look's like hell but stills run's better than it did when i bought it. well it's probably nonthing bad with your honda, it might just be tight from being new; just need's breaking in ! The cat i bought has the auto belt driven clutch and that is one thing i never thought i would ever buy, but my dealer assured me that since she started selling the auto's in 2001 not one has been brought back with belt problems and i've known her since she won her first motocross when she was four years old. and she has been selling parts for my honda and suzuki KQ for half of what the Honda and Suzuki dealers charged for the same parts. The shifter on my cat was real tight and hard to shift from reverse to newtral and low back to high range i only have 122 miles on it so far and it's getting easier to shift with each ride. I lost both leg's just below the knees back in march of 1975 and i had to weld a shift handle so i could shift gears on the honda and suzuki manual shift's. so it's alot easier to ride the auto on the cat that's one plus, but i miss being able to change gears when i want to. I'm just thankfull to be alive and still be able to drive at all, well i didn't intend to make this post so long; but good luck with your Honda.... williebee....!!!
