Does a K&N air filter really give you more power over a normal Polaris Predator 500 air filter? Can you feel the difference? I was told that just getting a k&N is better than getting a whole power kit, is that true?

They don't give more hp. Maybe if you had a dyno and check it that way but I have had many polaris atv's and there is no noticable difference. Alot better for cleaning thought. Pays for itself in a few months.

i noticed some difference nothing huge. i think it makes a more noticeable difference if you mount it directly to the carb and dont use a airbox

the more air you get the more power you have considering on your air/fuel mixture. the farther you get the air filter away from the carb by using a plastic tube (boot) that most quads come with the more bottom end you will have

The K&N doesn't give you any additional horsepower to speak of. I bought mine because the paper one was dirty and I figured it would be cheaper in the long run b/c of being reusable. They are also more maintanence and if you're not prepared for that they can damage your engine in the long run, so if a new paper filter every so often is no big deal for you, it could be the better way to go.

ALSO: do a search on my previous post regarding K&N filters coming over oiled from the factory. mine was so bad that it made my Pred run noticably rich, but after re-oiling it myself it's fine. I've heard this is actually fairly common...

I have never oiled mine. I don't see the point of it.

How come it says that it gives you 15 more horsepower in the catalogs? Dennis Kirck does.

The point is to catch the dirt other particles that may otherwise enter the engine. Since the K&N filter is made of cotton gauze, the K&N box tells you itself that the pores in the cotton are nowhere near small enough to effectively filter without the help of an oil to grab dirt. It is a very important mainenance procedure and if you value your machine, you should really begin doing it.

For one, I always thought those ads said 10-15% gain not 15 horsepower! (15% is still B.S. just not as much as 15HP) Also, when a predator makes only around 46 horse power stock, how do you expect to gain 33% with just an air cleaner? it's not possible. Especially since a full exhaust system will only grab you around 6HP. The K&N is a nice filter and the reusability is a plus, but NO WAY will you see gains over a fraction of a horse.
