Aggravated/Kodiak Rear Differential seals
#1
Ok, when i first bought the machine i had to put it back in the shop for dried out factory seals on the differentials front and rear. Acceptable, now only 500or so miles later i just noticed the left rear diff seal is leaking again. This could start to **** a person off lol. Has any other kodiak owners experienced such problems? Because this damn time it isnt under warranty (no i didnt buy extended). Also, the ride is fairly rough and the machine is also tippy while side hilling before/and after installing the 26inch swamp lites. Anyone adjusted the spring rate very much and if so how effective was it? Anyway good riding -Joe

I've also got the left rear leaking seal. I have kept an eye on th efluid level for over a year and it always stays full. It just leaks enough to attract dirt and dust around the seal. It's always something.

I have replaced almost all of mine. The dealer tells me it is from pressure washing. We do pressure wash ours but we avoid blasting seals. When i have pulled the old seals out i have noticed that on some the inner lip of the seal is torn. I've been thinking that is from when the install the axles at the factory. After changing them they haven't leaked again (yet). Also i have had them leak from 100 miles on up to 5000 miles no rhyme or reason to it. And it is always the left side, never the right

Wow thats odd if you stop and think about it. Not long at all after i had bought the machine, maybe 200-300miles the dealership had to replace all of them, both front and both rear differential seals. Just like you said Camo its just enough to attract dust and mud, its not real harmful but lead to premature wear. And just like yalls its the left rear seal. This seems a little bit odd to me lol. Maybe Yamaha doesnt quite have the kodiak irs setup right, its looking like more of a streamline problem or multiple lemons on that aspect. Im going to let it go for now but if it gets much worse i guess ill spend the money to fix it or replace it myself. Just hit 700miles on it last night. Mileage on other kodiaks? good ridin' -joe

I have had and currently have troubles with my rear seals on my 05 Kodiak 450 4X4. The first time came 2 months out of warranty and 2 huors after the factory 30 hours break-in and service, which I had done. The first time whole right side axle came out of the rear end and locked up my rear end. The dealer said it was because the boot cracked and water, dirt and such got in there. Now the unit has only 38 hours on it and been sitting in a garage for some time and the right inner rear boot is cracked and the rear end is leaking fluid. The dealer payed for the parts last time and I had to pay for the labor. It was a complete goat rope trying to get any help from the factory or dealer. I did keep a log and have pictures of what happened if anyone is interested.
