'00 Trail Boss running rich
#1
Hi All,
My wifes trail Boss 325 sat idle for over a year and I had to pull the carb and clean it. I replaced the air filter. It will start when cold but struggles to rev. It's spitting black smoke. Eventually it will die and won't restart. I made sure all the jets were clean and the float height was 13mm from the carb base. Any Ideas?? Can someone copy the carb section from their manual and post it here or email it to me?
I don't want to take it to the dealer, I'm perfectly capable of fixing it but I'm stumped............
Thanks,
Banzai !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But did you make sure all the passages where clean? Either use a air hose or a can of WD-30 with straw and blow out all passages. Sounds like it is running really rice. Make sure it is not choking all the time as well. Old gumming gas is hard to clean out without some extra help with carb cleaner of some kind. Maybe a spray can of carb cleaner would help as well. Could have choke passage problems also. It won't restart because it is choked to death with gas, the black smoke. Once you get it running put in a new plug as the old one can fail easy now with all the rich gas going through it.

Mom and Pop style carb cleaning.
I had a buddy that owned and grew up in a Mom and Pop garage, he told me that for 99% of all carb cleaning they would hook the fule line to a quart can of carb cleaner, run the motor until it sucked up the cleaner than let it sit most of the day. He told me that would clear up just about all of the issues that came into the shop. The ones it did not help they tore down.

Scootergptx- I sent you a PM regarding the carb section.
Yup, I cleaned all the passages with special hoses I've made for just these jobs. I used carb cleaner and compressed air. After the first attempt I filled the bowl with Yamaha carb cleaner and rolled it over to suck the solution into the circuits, letting it sit overnight. I then took it off a third time and went through it again................I think it might be the choke sticking.
Any more ideas are appreciated.
Thanks guys,

I got it fixed I knew it was something simple..............The needle somehow got dislodged in the slide. I pulled the top, reassembled the needle and all is GREAT. I checked the valve clearance while I was in there and they were good to go. Now I've got to take it in to get the recall.................yea, the recall...............done. I've had that card on my desk for two years. Problem is they won't order the parts until I bring the quad in. I don't like the idea of one of my machines sitting outside for a week
