okay so i am a newbie--Y2K beartracker help needed!

okay so i just want to say hi to all and tell you i am not a forum newbie. i am on several car forums and know the lingo. my dad has purchased a 2000 beartracker 250. clutchless 5 speed great looking ride but the trans is blown. he picked it up for 200 bucks and i think that is a very good deal. the guy said that he was driving hard one day and tried to shift into 5th gear but it would go into 5th. he then tried to downshift but woldnt budge. so then he got it home and smacked the rod that goes into the engine from the pedal with a hammer and got it to go into neutral. then he got it into first and drove it around but got it stuck in 1st.
so my question for you guys is what could have gone worng? anything common for these beasts or was it something the previous owner did? we are trying not tot take it to a dealer because of $$$ so i was hoping you all could help TIA

Sorry I can't offer much help. I just bought a Bear Tracker, and know very little about them yet. Have you pulled the oil filter and looked for debris? I would think if the tranny was really hosed that there would be some in there. I'm thinking at this point you have two choices.
1. Buy a shop manual and start tearing it down to see if you can see something obvious.
2. Bite the bullet and take it to the dealer.
