broke Eton
#1
Hi, I am new here, I came across it on my way to ebay to check out a part I am going to need for a 2004(?) Eton Viper 90. But wether or this part would help, I would like to hear a few opinions if any, before I spend the $$ and it doesn' help. We had a hard time starting it, would choke out and die when you let off the throttle. Got to where we were going, rode around about a half hour, my sons Eton may have taken on some water, but kept going for another half hour, turned it off and never have gotten it started since then. Changed the spark plug, nada. Once the oil light did come on while we had key on trying to start it, but oil was good, maybe just 1/4" below cap if even that much. Spark plug is getting no fire to it. The air filter was ok, a tad wet on bottom edge. Fuel lines and filter are all good. Had a tech look at it, seeme to be getting fire up until a module box? I think he was talking about a CDI module? It's $300!!! Has anyone else ever had a problem like this? The guy we had look at it never has. Am going to check ebay, but am not going to buy any parts until I can get a more definite cause, hope someone can help!!

Heck a brand new cdi is $30 -$65 I have some good used ones if you want you can pm me or call Hetrick Racing I can send you one of our spares and you'd get it in a day from here. $300 is crazy for a cdi..... RUN...

Try disconnecting the key switch connector in the wiring harness, then using a jumper wire in the connector try to start it. You might need two wires. Ours did that when it was about 6 mos. old. I took the switch apart and cleaned it and dielectric greased it and it worked.

dielectric grease? Is that a lithium grease? And since newnick's was only 6 months old, what causes it to do this? A short? All our riding is sand, and wet sand, and we have cleaned sand from places we didnt know the bike had...Would have the sand and water, if enough of it, would make it do this? Fuse is fine also.

Dielectric grease is a clear grease for electrical parts that might get corroded. The switch had a green colored corrosion on it that required cleaning before the grease is applied to retard the corrosion from coming back. Look for it at an auto parts store.

Do a search on spike 99 threads about stators. Run his tests and it will tell you for sure whether its stator or CDI. I just did the tests on my daughters scrambler 90 and found an open on the stator. Otherwise I was going after the CDI next.
