660r raptor 2 gear tranny problems...

i just bought an '01 yamaha raptor 660r, it runs great came with some mods. i am very satisfied for the price i paid. although it has the 2nd gear tranny problem many '01 '02 raptor owners complain about. what is the cheapest repair i can do? as of now i am just jumping from 1st to 3rd gear but i need the 2nd gear for trail riding, please help me.

The difference between the 01 and 02 second gear is the number of cogs. 01 has 3, 02 and up has 4. You can run second, just don't jam first to second with out the cluth. Baby that shift and you should be OK.
If it does break, shut it down as soon as you can because that broken cog will take out the oil pump and fry the motor.

There is one HUGE problem with running it the way it is.... When the shift dogs break off, they swim in your oil. If you're lucky, they'll just go the bottom of the pan and sit there. But if you're unlucky like I was last weekend at the dunes, the dogs start floating around and get jammed in gears, and lock everything up tight when you're out in the middle of Egypt. Cost me 900 bones to have the local Yamaha shop install '02 tranny.
