My new Recon hates water/mud - help?!
#1
Hi. I got a new 2006 Recon a couple of weeks ago and went to the mountains riding last Saturday. It performed great against the larger machines in my group, but it seems to have a serious problem with water/mud. Every time I hit a water or mud hole, even shallow ones, it was very difficult to keep running. I seems like water is getting in something and choking it out. At one point it totally died after crossing a stream only about a foot deep. It refired after about 5 minutes of cranking. After I got home and cleaned it up, I started looking around for any loose of chaffed electrical connections, but found none. Also, no water ever made it into the air box. The only thing I can figure is possible the steam off the motor was going directly into the intake snorkel and choking the engine since the opening is right under the tank. Has anybody else here had any bad experiences like this with their Recon when riding in water/mud? If so, what did you find to be the problem? Oh, I also removed the recoil starter and found it full of mud after reading about that issue on here. I have a macsim guard to install tonight to cure that problem.

I had the same problem with my 2004 recon es. Every time i hit a mud hole, or water hole it sputtered and even died sometimes. I put a piece of rubber over my airbox, but i dont think that helped.

i have an 04 recon as well and sometimes it couldnt work better but other times i stall out and i cant get it started for another 10 minutes and the box is dry and no water went into the intake...i have come to think though that sometimes if you go through deep water once asome water could get in the gas causing it to stall, so every time i have that problem several times i drain the gas and it seems to work good afterwards

I have a 2005 Recon ES. So far I have taken it through some mud and water. Through the mud it performs just fine doesn't die. One time we came to a creek i wanted to see how deep it was so I went in slow. Then the motor got water just started climbing up the side of the motor it died. I was at an idle. My 4 wheeler started right back up just fine. I just had to throttle it a bit to keep it running until i got out of the water. I was told to increase the idle a bit. I dunno why it did it still. I havn't been back to the spot yet to test and see if it worked.

i Have a 2005 honda recon es and i have only had that happen to me a couple of times and every time i go riding(very often) i have to cross a river that is sometime almost 2 feet. the one time it happened though i couldn't even get it to idle. finally i put dry gas into it and drained the whole carb like 5 times and after that it worked fine.

Follow the spark plug wire back to the coil. Disconnect the power wires to the coil and coat the connections with dielectric grease (or vasaline will do in a pinch). coat the area where the spark plug wire goes into the coil with silicone sealant. Put some di-electric grease in the spark plug boot.
Of course, let the machine dry out well before doing this, you dont want to seal water in!!!! LoL
