Does anyone know if I can upgrade a 1996 Wolverine stator to that of a 2001?

I know they are not the same, the 1996 has 2 pickup coils the 2001 only has one, but has it been improved and will it work???

How would one find out, other than paying the price and trying it?

2001 stators are available but the 1996 are hard to find and expensive.
