Get him a Unison Desert Cat 90.
You can screw the throttle limiter in on it, and he can grow into it. My just turned 8 year old is 34lbs. and 42 inches and thats what he rides. No sense having to upsize every year. Plus it's a 2-stroke, what could be BETTER!!!

The LT50's sorta suck. No suspension worth much there.
What your looking for is a CVT (no gears/belt drive)
DRR is a good one. Tops the list of 50's IMO.
Try to stick with a 2 stroke.
A 70cc machine may be better seeins that they can be restricted,he has expierience, and is that big.

I would say buy a 4 stroke if you are buying new. If these EPA goons get their way, and you are a park/state park rider, that might be all they allow **rolls eyes**. I would also like to recomend the Eton 90R 4 stroke. They still make them in a 2 stroke, but if you are buying new... I rode one of them around befor i bought my 250. And I was really surprised by the power, speed, and ease of controls. Dont forget, with the 90R, the R means REVERSE!!

4 stroke for sure, no gas/oil mix 2 strokes are being phased out by the EPA , less maintenance on the4 stroke motor down the road. My 8 year old grandson rides my Redcat 150cc with the throttle limiter set to 20 mph and love it. My 7 yr old grandson has a Polaris 90cc and he has about out grown it, so his Dad just got a used Boreem 110 cc for him. If your going for new equipment do it like sneakers next size larger, Kids grow fast. They all have throttle stop screws to control top speed.

P.S. Rember everyone has a diffrent view point you have to do what fits your needs.

2-stroke all the way. They just flat outperfom a 4-stroke of the same displacement, especially with a few bolt-ons.
And I disagree that 2-strokes require more maintenance. They require different maintenance but not more. Most mini's you just fill the oil tank. There is no manual mixing unless you decide to remove it. 2-stroke also = no oil changes and no valve adjustments. Maintenance is 6 or half dozen the other imo.

I'm with Raptorlegs on the two strokes..Your kids will probably outgrow them before they need a rebuild but even if they did require one its pretty simple and inexpensive compared to a 4 stroke..I also like that they can really be hopped up..I think of it as the atv being able to grow with your child as they grow and want more performance..This will be tough and very expensive to do with a 4 stroke.

If he's going to race, then get a two stroke, otherwise my vote is for four stroke all the way.
We've got one of each in kids quads. When trail riding, it's much nicer following behind our four-stroke Honda vs the two-stroke Suzuki. Even though they are different bikes, the Honda has a lot more controllable low end power - here too, better for trail riding. Maintenance on both is about the same.
