Are 2004 YFZ 450 any good?

Aright, I hade a frend offer me his YFZ 450 for $3000. It has some light scraches and next to the shifter the paint is starting to wear through. What I wanted to know is if there are any known problems with the 2004 YFZ that I need to know about. I have A 2001 raptor and will the yfz 450 beat my piped raptor in 300 foot or quarter mile? Fill me in on what I need to know about these quads. Will I have to change oil all the time and will it be alot of maintence and mony put into it to keep it running? Thanks rob

If both are piped the YFZ would likely win, not a total blowout or anything. If it is your friend, haven't you raced him yet? Yes, you would have to change the oil and check valve tolerances more often than with the Raptor. There were only a few issues with the '04s overall. Bad water pump seals leaked and had to be replaced on some early ones. If it still has the rubber decompression plug, upgrading to a billet one will prevent the plug from blowing out and the engine running out of oil as a result. There are some battery charging issues too. These can be solved by running with the lights on all the time, or riding at a race type pace, or removing the lights and installing a resistor kit Yamaha sells. The problem is the charging system was designed to basically be inactive unless there is a decent load on it(hence a minor increase in available power when racing.) The battery may not charge during tamer riding conditions unless the lights are on or the resistor kit is in place, putting a load on the system. Overall they are great quads, 3K is a good price for one in decent condition.
