Sorry, but with his mods you are totally wrong. He will be going through the gears in a heartbeat with a 12/40 combo out in open trails. For SLOW trail riding I would go with a 13/41 or 42 setup. For fast trails a 13/40 and for open fields or desert, 14/39 or even 14/38. Im running 14/40 and ride in the desert, I can go through the gears quickly and still have lots of room to give it hell. With a 14/3X you will have more top end speed and with your built motor you wont have a problem pulling that combination.
For reference, I weight 220 without gear and I can outrun my 160lb bro (velocyraptor) on his piped/jetted raptor with 13/40 and 22s. My bike is heavier than his and older too, but I have a very similar engine to yours.
